Defog Your Understanding About Cataracts

Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. They generally develop slowly over time as a result of the natural ageing process. Nearly everyone will develop cataracts, especially those over 60, although they vary in severity.

What Causes Cataracts?

The most common cause of cataracts is age. As we age, the proteins in our lenses begin to break down and clump together, fogging the lens, which increases as time passes. However, sometimes cataracts develop due to other causes, like injury, infection, medications, or sun exposure.

Some risk factors make some more prone to cataracts than others. You can help prevent or delay cataracts by remaining aware of these risks:

Treatment & Prevention

During every comprehensive eye exam, we carefully examine your eye health, assessing your lens for signs of cataracts. Although they can usually be managed with prescription lenses, cataracts can begin to affect your vision and make daily activities more difficult. If we discover you have cataracts impacting your vision, we will refer you to a trusted ophthalmologist for cataract surgery.

You can trust our experienced team, so we are here to provide pre and postoperative care and are happy to answer any questions you may have.

There is no way to prevent age-related cataracts from developing, but you can help delay them by:

  • Undergoing routine comprehensive eye exams. Exams are essential for monitoring your ocular health.
  • Carefully managing any health problems, like diabetes. Always see your doctor regularly and follow all medical recommendations.
  • Wearing sunglasses outdoors and while using tanning beds to protect your eyes from UV light.
  • Wearing safety eye protection at work to prevent eye injuries.
  • Eating well and maintaining a healthy diet that includes brightly coloured fruits and vegetables.
